Did you know the Orphan Train Movement 1854-1929 covered 75 years of America's history?

The Anomalies of Placing Out Children & Babies
  • By 1854 there were over 30,000 children living in the New York City streets. 
  • Children were transported by train across all 48 American states 
  • The 1880 US Federal Census includes juvenile asylums
  • Over 150,000 orphaned children were placed in homes
  • Primarily the Orphan Train children were placed in Midwestern homes 
  • The 400 Irish orphans placed in Mexican Homes in Arizona were by law forced to be returned and placed in non Mexican families. Some were kidnapped.
  • Colored children included Italians, Armenian's and the Finish
  • Black Orphans, vs Colored were also placed, but a 3rd party system was set up for the success of placing.
